Overview

This course introduces students to ArcGIS and provides the foundation for using ArcGIS 8. It provides the fundamental ArcGIS knowledge and experience needed to enroll in Introduction to ArcGIS Part 2 (for ArcView 8,ArcEditor 8 and ArcInfo 8). Students learn how to use ArcMap, ArcCatalog and ArcToolbox and explore how these applications work together to provide a complete GIS software solution. The course covers fundamental GIS concepts as well as how to create, edit and work with georeferenced spatial data. Students learn to manipulate tabular data, query a database and present data clearly using maps and charts.

All those who are new to ArcGIS or to geographic information systems in general.

Prerequisites

  • Basic windowing software knowledge e.g. copy, delete, rename files and directories

  • Use of the mouse
