Pre-conference Seminars -- By Day

 Sunday
Oct 29th, 2006

Sunday all day (8:30 – 17:00)

ArcGIS Enterprise systems: performance
and scalability

Sunday all day – intermediate / advance – cost $150
Full day session includes lunch and tea break

This workshop will discuss how ArcGIS Enterprise Geodatabase systems can provide a high level of performance and scalability. Whether or not the system is intended for an oil, gas, or telcom utility; local municipality; or cadastral application, the desired functionality is expected to be delivered in a high performing package, achieving a high level of scalability. Some key performance and scalability factors will be covered in the workshop.

The Enterprise Geodatabase Systems will be addressed from a systemwide perspective, a broad view of a system that includes ArcGIS software (COTS), ArcObjects customization, DBMS configurations (single- and multiple instances) and transactions management, e.g. editing workflows.

Some insight will be provided into performance factors with distributed enterprise geodatabases using replication, history as “read-only” publishing databases. The workshop will discuss some new ArcGIS 9.2 features to support distributed geodatabase.

This workshop will analyze the interaction of various ArcGIS system components and explain the investigative methodology to identify and fix performance issues.

The workshop will include

- Common issues that impact scalability

- Geodatabase and system configurations

- Application tuning using out-of-the box ArcGIS functionality

- Application tuning with custom ArcObjects  based applications

- How to test for performance and scalability and the investigative methodology to
identify potental issues that impact the scaling of the enterprise geodatabase.

- Case studies

Intended Audience:
ArcSDE administrators, database administrators, system integrators and architects, and ArcObjects developers

Sunday all day (8:30 – 17:00)

GIS Project Implementation and Management (**Canceled**)
Sunday all day – intermediate / advance – cost $150
Full day session includes lunch and tea break

This One-Day Seminar will focus on GIS project implementation tasks using real-life examples from dozens of projects conducted by the presenter over the last 24 years.  The 4D+ methodology to be discussed is centered on four major tracks: Define Design, Develop, and Deploy.  Project Management activities are wrapped around each of the tracks and cover all aspects of project management.  The methodology addresses tasks and subtasks for each of the 4 tracks.  Tips for successful project implementation will be presented as well.  Finally templates for many of the activities will be presented as examples and base references, and can be used by the seminar attendees as base references for GIS projects they undertake.

Sunday afternoon (13:30 – 17:00)   (**Canceled**)

Customizing and developing desktop and server solutions
using ArcObjects

Sunday afternoon – intermediate / advance – cost $75
Half day session includes tea break

Monday
Oct 30th, 2006

Monday all day (8:30 – 17:00)

Understanding the ArcGIS Server at Version 9.2
Monday all day – intermediate / advance – cost $150
Full day session includes lunch and tea break

This 1 day seminar will introduce ArcGIS Server 9,2 and provide both a high-level description well as technical details of implementing and deploying ArcGIS Server.  This session will cover an overview of ArcGIS Server, using ArcGIS Server as a administrator, Deploying Services, Deploying applications, end-user experiences, and building custom solutions.  The technologies discussed will include .NET, Java, and Mobile solutions as well as interoperability with other systems.  The presenter will use a series of slides and demonstrations to illustrate the details of ArcGIS Server.

Audience: Beginner to Intermediate GIS Users
Prerequisites:
basic understanding of IT server architecture and deployment options.

Monday half day (8:30 – 12:00)

Advanced modeling and scripting with Geoprocessing
Monday afternoon – intermediate / advance – cost $75
Half day session includes tea break

ArcGIS Desktop geoprocessing options include accessing single tools from ArcToolbox, building models with model builder, and writing scripts with the Python programming language. Depending on licensing level and extension availability, hundreds of tools, models, and sample scripts can be available. ArcGIS Desktop users can realize some time saving benefits by learning how to group just the right set tools together to solve a problem.

Rather than a disparate discussion of each tool, model, and script, this seminar will focus on composing a geoprocessing symphony of efficient workflows. Students will learn to put all of the technical geoprocessing capabilities together to solve problems. Lectures and demonstrations will focus on developing solid geoprocessing workflows like interapplication communication, iteration, feedback, and sensitivity analysis.

This seminar is for ArcGIS desktop users who want to take their geoprocessing, model building, and scripting skills to the next level.

Monday all day (8:30 – 17:00)

Planning and managing a GIS
Monday all day – intermediate / advance – cost $150
Full day session includes lunch and tea break

Monday afternoon (13:30 – 17:00)

Map Publishing Using the New Cartography
Facilities of ArcGIS
Monday afternoon – intermediate / advance – cost $75
Half day session includes tea break

This session is aimed at organizations that want to publish better quality maps, using the new cartographic design and finishing capabilities of ArcGIS 9.2. It will cover the decisions to be made in setting up a cartographic workflow based on GIS data, the cartographic design process of setting up representation rules, and the graphical tools that allow the cartographer to override the machine decisions in order to employ his or her human expressive, artistic, and communicative skills.
